Where Respect Is Due
The Rodney Dangerfields of the small business world. That's how a recent report characterized the 6.6 million small business owners currently operating what it called "viable enterprises" from their homes.
The implication was obvious — we home-based business owners "don't get no respect," as Dangerfield would have put it.
The Dangerfield allusion was in the recent Small Business Success Index Research Note, a joint effort of the University of Maryland's School of Business and the Herndon, Va., firm Network Solutions.
The report cited a "common" perception that home-based businesses are "merely hobbies or side businesses." Such enterprises are "rarely regarded as significant players in the U.S. economy," stated the October 2009 report,
That may be so. But today the broader home-based work sector — including entrepreneurs; independent contractors and other soloists, and part-time and full-time telecommuters — garners far more attention and, I dare say, respect than when I joined this faction in the late 1980s.
Just last month, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that between 1999 and 2005 the number of people working from home grew nearly 20 percent — Read Full Article»

The Freelance Writer's Blues, Tax Season 2010
Montie ~ Chicago Now
By now you should've gotten all of your W-2s and 1099s, and you're preparing for tax season before the deadline date of April 15, 2010. For some people, it's a time to roll in the dough and get some much needed dinero. You're dancing around your home like you're Swizz Beatz and saying "Somebody bring me back some money please," but don't let Uncle Sam switch up the chorus on you. For others, like me who usually end up with an underpayment and have to pay the state, tax season can be a frustrating time. Even worse, I completed my taxes this weekend and owe the Feds and the state.
Here is the downside of being a freelance writer and an independent contractor. Although you do get more money up front for projects and are paid in full, you are held responsible for paying your own taxes. This could end up being pretty expensive come January for any contracted job that pays you $600 or more. But with the right recordkeeping, you can make doing your taxes a little less painful.
Lesson One: Each company that has paid you $600 or more is required to send a 1099 form. However, you are responsible for disclosing payments of all jobs that you've completed in any given year as an independent contractor. You will have to fill out the Schedule C (Form 1040) entitled, "Profit or Loss from Business." This form asks you to calculate your gross receipts or sales, business expenses, home office expenses, travel expenses and any repairs and maintenance. This form is imperative to show how much you made versus how much you spent. If your total is negative and you spent more than you made, you must disclose this information to show that your investment is not at risk. If it is a risky investment, you may end up paying all that money back if you're not honest about it. (I had a previous co-worker who was an author, and he'd charge everything he did as a business expense even if it was for personal reasons. Ten years later, he's still paying off his back debt.) The FBI Wants In On Behavioral Targeting
by Meghan Keane - eConsultancy
It's funny how the federal government's position on behavioral targeting changes when it wants to use the information gathered. According to CNET:
"The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes."
Mueller has been interested in online consumer data since 2006, when he initially called for internet service providers to track internet users.
While any tool that makes it easier to find and track sex offenders sounds like a good thing, giving the federal government access... Read Full Article »» |

6 Ways To Improve SEO
(And Caffeine Is Not One of Them)
MarketingVox
When Google starting talking about its forthcoming Caffeine, a new technology that improves the company's indexing infrastructure, last August it was assumed it would have a big impact on Google's search engine algorithms.
Caffeine wasn’t released until recently; since then some SEO experts have come to conclude that it isn’t the game changer...Read Full Article »» |

Is Google Bad at Social Media or Really, Really Good at it?
Chris Crum - WebProNews
Google often takes a lot of flack for not being incredibly successful with its social media efforts. Most recently, Caroline McCarthy and Tom Krazit tackled this subject in a CNET article claiming that "Google struggles with social skills." I would not go so far as to say that I completely disagree with them. They make plenty of factual points that are simply undeniable. Orkut hasn't set the world afire. Jaiku and Dodgeball didn't work out. YouTube was pretty much established by the time Google bought it, and even since it has not been the financial success many would have assumes it would be, despite its enormous popularity. How Many People Work In Your Company?
Two friends, who had lost contact for many years, were catching up with each other. One asked, "So, you've got your own company, huh? How lucky!" The other replied, "Just a small one, nothing to be proud of."
Disbelieving, the first queried, "Small? How many people work in your company?"
The other sadly answered, "About half of them."
A Blinking Problem
One day a man tried to get a job at a great company. He passed every test with flying colours. At the final interview part, the CEO told him that his constant blinking would bother customers.
"I can fix that with some Aspirin. Just take some and I'll be better in a second"
So, he reaches into his pocket and pulls condom after condom out until he finds the Aspirin. He takes it and his blinking goes away.
The CEO says "We don't approve of womanizing!"
The guy says "Oh! No! Have you ever tried to ask a pharmacist for aspirin while your winking"

Office Supply Shortagest
Resolving to surprise her husband, an executive's wife stopped by his office. She found him with his secretary sitting in his lap.
Without hesitating, he dictated, "...and in conclusion, gentlemen, shortage or no shortage, I cannot continue to operate this office with just one chair.
Dumb Thief
Arkansas: Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. Seems the liquor store window was made of Plexi-Glass. The whole event was caught on videotape.
