Amid Economic Downturn, More Starting Home-based Businesses
Mrs. Block, 42, started her business, Sane Spaces, in 2008 from her home in Milford, Pike County, after AT&T proposed to move her former job to Seattle. All the travel required in her former job made her life hectic as a wife and mother of two boys, she said.
"I didn't want to go back to singing lullabies to my babies in hotel rooms," she said. "I decided to look at another opportunity to fit a client base in my schedule and support my family."
Today, her home-based career allows her to set her own schedule to make time for grocery shopping, preparing healthy meals for her family, exercising and a monthly book club, she said.
Mrs. Block, who promotes her business on www.sanespaces.com, is one of a growing number of people launching home-based businesses locally and nationally.
Several people attended a seminar in the fall to learn more about starting them, said Elaine Tweedy, director of the University of Scranton Small Business Development Center. In 2009, the center assisted 67 people with home-based businesses, an increase from 39 in 2008.

If you’ve gotten past the basics of what RSS feeds are about and how they can benefit you, then you are ready to learn one of the best-kept secrets about presenting your news feed on your website. It’s not enough to simply install an orange RSS button for visitors to click, to see your feed or to fetch the feed address. To really bring benefit to your site, you should display some of the most recent items in your feed directly on your website, even if only a partial presentation of the item descriptions (aka articles).
But how? What code is used to display the news feed? After all, the feed is an XML file not suitable for direct human consumption. It needs to be translated into the HTML code that a browser understands and can present in human-readable form.
The good news is that there are websites out there that offer scripts to do that translation to human-readable text. You can locate them by doing google search on terms like “RSS feed translation”. Job History
A gal comes in for her interview with the human resources department of a large company and hands the executive her application. As the executive begins to scan her resume, he notices that she has been fired from every job she's ever held.
"I must say," says the executive, "your work history is terrible. You've been fired from every job."
"Yes," says the lady.
"Well," continues the executive, "there's not much positive in that."
"Well, " says the woman as she pokes the application. "At least I'm not a quitter!"
Digging A Hole
The boss ordered one of his men to dig a hole eight feet deep. When the job was completed, the boss returned and explained that an error had been made and the hole wouldn't be needed. "Fill 'er up," he ordered.
The worker did as he had been told, but encountered a problem. He wasn't able to get all the dirt packed back into the hole without leaving a mound on top. He went to the office and explained his problem.
"Honesty!" snapped the boss. "The kind of help you get these days! Obviously, there's only one thing to do. Go back and dig that hole deeper!"
Infectious Rabies
Feeling very ill, a tough businessman went to see his doctor.
After examining him, the doctor backed away and said, "I regret having to tell you this, but you have an advanced case of highly infectious rabies. It appears you've had it for some time. It will almost certainly be fatal."
In shock, the man asked the doctor for pen and paper.
"Do you want to write your will?" the doctor asked.
